Our Coastal Cottage
BURLEIGH HEADS, QUEENSLAND
Located in the heart of Burleigh and renovated by Davey Constructions, this cottage has a deep connection to the history of the surrounds.
Bringing new life to an almost 100-year-old cottage
A celebration of heritage and modern life, Our Coastal Cottage is a beautiful harmony of old and new. Builder and interior design duo, Jared and Sarah Davey, bought the 1930’s Worker’s Cottage with a vision to re-design and extend the small space while maintaining its original character. Every space was meticulously planned out and every detail was carefully considered to achieve their dream family home.
Decades of history intertwined
Being a leading coastal builder, local stories resonate with Jared and Sarah. They didn’t want to knock down and rebuild the cottage, they wanted to breathe new life into it using sustainable methods and materials. Using as much of the original features as possible—such as re-using the original VJ panelling, windows, framing timber, stain glass and bricks—they carefully selected new materials to complement this. With decades of local sustainable forestry behind it, australian araucaria™ turned out to be more than just an aesthetic choice. Like the cottage, it has a deep local history that is now part of the home.
“Being local is something that resonates with us because we love our coastline and surrounding areas. It means a lot to work with local businesses and materials. Honouring our heritage and taking a sustainable approach to building is really at the heart of what we do.””

Traditional cottage charm created by timeless timber
While maintaining the original charm of the home, Jared and Sarah used australian araucaria™ for doors, windows, and decorative mouldings including skirting and architraves. It creates an inviting warmth that echoes the laid-back yet luxurious feel of the rest of the cottage.
“We wanted to use timber for the facade of the home so it would hold onto the original feel of the workers cottage. Our supplier specialises in decorative timber and provided australian araucaria™ for the beautiful French casement windows, entry door and back door. In my eye it’s not just timber, it’s an architectural feature.”

Discovering a natural beauty
Since using australian araucaria™ for their cottage renovation, Jared and Sarah have worked it into other builds such as the Coolangatta Project (2022-23). It was the perfect architectural feature for the custom timber doors, creating a beautiful entry to the spectacular home.
