The University of the Sunshine Coast

MORETON BAY

The UniSC Moreton Bay expansion gives teachers, researchers, and students enhanced spaces with three new buildings that add 12,500m2 to the campus.

Bringing natural warmth into vibrant spaces

Featuring bespoke spaces, the expansion includes three new buildings harnessing the evolving digital landscape and social trends. The new buildings feature additional teaching and learning spaces, laboratories, a sports hall, event space, a sports science facility, and student hubs.

To create a modern and open feel as well as bringing natural warmth into the space, australian araucaria™ was used throughout the offices, corridors, teaching spaces, and student hubs. The architectural and acoustic qualities of the timber also made it perfect for the internal cladding of the sports court.

The new spaces encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and social interaction to further enhance the campus experience. They’re driven by inclusive and accessible design that offers an abundance of uses for students and the wider campus community.

“The architectural qualities of australian araucaria™ made it a great choice for the project. The light colour gave the open plan spaces a light feeling. It looks good and is locally sourced which was a huge plus for our team.”

Modern methods achieve a tight deadline

With a tight deadline for the expansion, Kirk architects (design), Cottee Parker Architects (Construction) and BADGE leveraged modern construction methods including off-site factory assembly. The australian araucaria™ featured throughout the three new buildings was manufactured and prefinished by premium plywood supplier Austral Plywoods.

The modular approach and versatility of the timber provided fast and easy installation. This allowed BADGE to work quickly while maintaining a high-quality finish using sustainable timber.

“It’s such a versatile product and easy to work into the structure. It’s lightweight and robust which made it simple to install, even for one person or in tight spaces, and we could move it between levels. Since it was being used for a lot of the interior, we valued the quality timber and manufacturing with a uniform surface and no imperfections.”
